밀도가 높은 대도시의 거주하는 사람들일수록 자신만의 공간, 자신만의 프라이버시를 더 중시한다고 생각합니다. 셰어하우스는 공유를 하기 때문에 생기는 많은 장점들도 있지만 공유를 하기 때문에 불편한 점들도 수반될 수밖에 없고요. lexander에 의해 쓰인, 유명한 건축도시 저서,에서는 자신의 방이라는 챕터에서 미국 사회학자 푸트와 코트렐의 연구를 근거로 들어, ‘혼자가 되는 기회를 자주 갖지 못한 사람은 다른 사람들과 가까워 질 수 없다.’ 고 주장합니다. 여기서 Foote와 Cottrell의 연구란 타인과의 접촉이 증가하다가 그 한계점을 넘어버리면, 접촉은 더이상 공감을 향상시키지 못하며, 오히려 방어적이 된다는 것이죠. 가장 사적인 공간인 주거를 공유하는 것이 이 개념이며,그에따라 타인과의 접촉이 많을수 밖에 없는 환경이지만, 그럴수록 사적공간의 보장이 확실히 바탕이 되어야합니다. 이것이 바탕되지 않는다면 아무도 공유하지 않는 공유 주거가 되겠죠.
하지만 타인과의 관계를 단순히 public과 private으로 단순히 이분화 시킬수는 없습니다. 친밀도와 개인의 상태,또는 상황에 따라 관계는 달라질 수 있습니다. 따라서 개인의 방을 가장 사적인 공간으로 놓고 셰어하우스내에서 일어나는 일련의 행위들을 나열하여 놓고 그 경계를 다층적으로 살펴본 뒤,공간의 성격에 따라 공간을 공유할 사람들의 단위를 나누었습니다.
First, there is the shared space for all residents, which includes the common kitchen and lounge. This is the most public area of the entire shared house.Next, between my private room and this shared space, there is a semi-public or semi-private space that is not as intimate as a personal room but still closely related to one's privacy. This is where the concept of "units" or "seeds" comes into play. While there are various ways to divide the 20 people into groups, we decided to set the unit size to 4-5 people, as it seemed most suitable for maintaining a sense of intimacy. Finally, the most private space, my room, is the smallest unit. As mentioned earlier, these 5 units are arranged around a central courtyard, with front and back spaces. Since the courtyard is a space that leans toward the public side, we arranged the relatively more public spaces, like the living rooms within each unit, to face the courtyard. This layout helps maintain a balance between privacy and community within the shared house.
