개발이 미덕인 시대에 지어진 못생긴 건축물들이 우리 도시에는 너무도 많습니다. 하지만 이들 역시 우리가 가진 역사의 무늬라고 생각합니다. 집장사가 지어놓은 집이라고 모두 허물고 다시 짓는다면 우리가 살고 있는 도시는 50년마다 리셋되는 과거가 없는 도시가 될 것이고 이는 미래가 없는 도시가 된다는 뜻이라 생각합니다. 잭슨빌딩과 같이 소위 ‘업자’가 지어 놓은 건축물을 건축가의 리터치로 새로운 생명을 불어넣는 작업을 꾸준히 하고 싶습니다. 이런 작업들이 모여 기억이 있고 역사가 있는 공간을 만들어 낼 수 있다면, 그리고 그로인해 수천년의 역사를 가진 도시에 흔적을 남길 수 있다면 건축가로서 더할나위 없는 영광이라 생각합니다.
In an era where development is considered a virtue, there are still many unattractive buildings in our city. However, I believe these also serve as the patterns of our history. If we tear down all the buildings built by property developers and rebuild them, our city would become a city that resets every 50 years with no past, which means it would have no future.
I want to continuously work on breathing new life into buildings erected by developers, like the Jackson Building, through the touch of architects. If these efforts collectively create spaces with memories and history, and leave traces in a city with thousands of years of history, I would consider it the greatest pride as an architect.
